I want my next car to be an electric car, but sadly I don't think it will... The only practical electric car (for me) is a Tesla, I currently drive a Mercedes. Those build quality issues would drive me nuts. My neighbor bought a Model X, I lost count of how many times he was driving a replacement car in his first months of owning it as the issues with his car got fixed.

It's a competitive advantage for Tesla. Everyone else has the freedom to invest in a charging network. Until then, it looks like CCS is the new unofficial standard in the US. The problem isn't the connector standard, it's the lack of chargers. Don't conflate the lack of options offered by manufacturers with the envy of Tesla's superior charging offering.

Comparing panel gaps and paint finishing as anywhere near the same level of problem as crap and expensive batteries, crap range, and crap charging network is the same as saying you wouldn't want a doughnut because its icing isn't as nice as a competitor who makes doughnuts with worse ingredients. I mean yeah but...not really. The issues Tesla has to fix are relatively easy. The issues the competition has to face, such as not selling EV's at a loss, living in a post-tax-subsidy world, selling inferior performing cars, having to contend with a crap electrify america network..those aren't easy fixes. And I'd wager that this is why there is no competition.

I believe, if you do the math, an electric car is good if your driving to and from work, and you can charge your car when you're home. But not for a road trip. It takes 30 min to "charge" a car, Right? Waiting in line for a charge with people in front of you charging their car....every 200 miles. Who wants that?

One mistake made here is assuming that Teslas have the range advertised. Cars they are releasing today such as the Model Y have sub-300 mile ranges just like much of the competition. Check out the Alex on Autos video "Tesla vs Ford: Which One Can go 250 Miles?" where the Mach E beat the Model Y by 45 miles even though the Model Y is advertised to have 56 more miles of range. A 101 mile discrepancy! That's just one example showing that other car manufacturers are much more realistic with their range estimates than Tesla.

  56. Dalton Brennan

    Dalton Brennanחודש לפני

@Miguel lopez affordable meaning even people who rent could afford it with time... Can actually travel meaning street legal and can actually go at least far enough to make sure you can hit the next charging station... You know common Sense requirements for what I asked

  57. Miguel lopez

    Miguel lopezחודש לפני

Depend on what low income means and what your work is, if you drive 150 miles a day to work and gas is a little expensive even at 37k this car is worth it, if you drive 40 miles then the car would have to be 25k for it to be worth it, this is based on average fuel and maintenance cost, $5000 EV exist but they are basically golf carts.

Remember whenever USBC was only for Apple products specifically the Mac mainly...You would think that they would have been the ones two of trademark the USBC port.

  60. Dalton Brennan

    Dalton Brennanחודש לפני

@Miguel lopez oh my God Apple made it and my statement was why weren't they the ones that incorporated into their devices and patented it because they literally invented it so therefore they could be making money off of every single one else who has it or everyone else would still be stuck on micro USB and they would be the only ones with type c and lightning chargers if they so choose to keep the lightning chargers even though it really just seems like a way to make sure that Apple owners can't use any other charger other than their charger to charge their phones and iPads unless you buy a third party lightning charger which might not work so well

  61. Miguel lopez

    Miguel lopezחודש לפני

@Dalton Brennan that's how standards get adopted some engineers make it and companies see if they need or want it and agree to set specifications for standardization between multiple manufacturers selling to direct companies, apple usually puts them in their products first because they and their customer can afford to use a new cable requirement, then the market decide what sticks, they haven't had as much success with lightning cable because it's not standard across multiple devices.

  62. Dalton Brennan

    Dalton Brennanחודש לפני

@Miguel lopez no duh things are developed years before you see them on products however since Apple invented it you would think that they would be the ones that popularized it you know added it to their devices to charge them I mean the only place they have the lightning ports are on the iPhones and iPads the Max still use type c chargers and they seem to be slightly better for phones even though Apple insists that the lightning charger is so much better... Even though they invented both of them

  63. Dalton Brennan

    Dalton Brennanחודש לפני

@Miguel lopez it's not standardized until a majority of companies start using it and apples were the only one using it back then with maybe one or two really small companies or one or two really high-end products in a company's lineup... And I guarantee you that very few of those products were in the hands of people who could say a Ford a low-end Mac that had a type c so no one had a reasonable income level had type c before the Mac.

  64. Miguel lopez

    Miguel lopezחודש לפני

@Dalton Brennan if you saw it on a mack then it's been standardized, these thing get devolved years before you see them on a product so customer don't run around with USBC cables that don't work on USBC ports made by other manufacturers.

I’d like to answer your question as to why other car brands don’t have the “Supercharger”. An EV battery size is measured in kWh, or kilowatt hours. By definition it is a measure of energy used by an appliance if it were kept running for one hour. The battery capacity of an EV controls how much range it can have per charge. *A low kWh on an AEV is cheaper than a high kWh due to its longer range capabilities.* For example, Nissan Leafs have under 200 miles of range, come in 40 kWh and 60 kWh variants. The Long Range Tesla Model 3, capable of over 300 miles of range, comes with a 75 kWh battery pack. The negative of having an EV that has a larger kWh than the next, is its dependency on the DC charging. (That is also why these vehicles tend to come in different types because of the different kWh- the more expensive the more miles the more it lasts) If Tesla didn’t have a type 2 DC charging (the supercharger) no one would want to wait 24+ hours to charge their expensive vehicle. Also Tesla is currently a trailblazer for AEVs that can go long range, so of course they would have high kWh in their vehicles. The issue is that the technology is new, and other car brands have to evolve to higher battery packs to play catch up. My BMWi3 only had 33 kWh. Imagine I had to top off my vehicle every single chance I had. I also charged it at home but I didn’t need anything over 200 miles per charge. I study environmental design and engineering, this is probably one of my favorite topics. I love seeing the new cars hit the market.

Other brands don't have superchargers because they are waiting for the government to help pay for their own brand or shared network that isn't completely owned by a competitor, almost the same reason they don't put bigger batteries in their cars, it's cheaper, they also don't want to pay the extra cost of putting cooling and sturdier electronics to take advantage of 250kwh charging stations even if non tesla networks offer up to 350kwh.

In the UK their are more EV charging stations than petrol stations - plus all those petrol stations WILL switch over by adding more and more charging points for EVs. 700 mile range in an EV is not necessary. No human can drive 700 miles without stopping for a comfort break - normally around 200-230 miles. In the UK the average commute is around 30 miles. So for many 150 mile range is fine for most people in Europe. This range is now considered acceptable for city EVs. So 400 miles is more than adequate in a Model S - with the ability to rapid charge for long journeys giving you another 100 miles in the time it takes for a comfort break. The future is here right now.

6:20 Re: other EVs compatibility with Tesla Superchargers - when Elon mentioned about them taking up the Tesla offer [because it is ridiculously stupid not to], but it's kind of low key, my mind goes back to when Tesla adopted the CCS plug for Europe, and there were rumours of electric VW Golfs, Renaults Zoes, etc hooking up to Superchargers with CCS outlets. And it turned out to be true, with Tesla either colluding or just turning a blind eye. Incidentally, I can believe that Taycan couple having problems charging on the road. The network is really quite mediocre across my area [which they passed through]. Of course the Tesla network is way better, as it is plug-in and walk away.

    MrBTRDAYZחודש לפני

Great fireside chat, Marques! I am struggling with the range vs build quality issue now as I contemplate my first EV purchase. It may not be completely fair to compare the range of a Ford to that of a Tesla that is 2 to 3 times the price of the Ford. Not many people can afford to purchase a car approaching 6 figures. Also, Tesla is in the same position that Apple was in when the first iPhone and then iPad were released. Essentially, Apple owned all of the market... the whole pie, until Android handsets started taking slices of the pie for themselves. Market share for the originator has nowhere to go but down once viable competitors are out there. What's scary about that prospect is the fact that Tesla has only become profitable year over year within the past year. AND, that profitability includes revenue from selling carbon credits to other auto manufacturers who aren't yet up to speed. It seems like competition could easily bump Tesla back down to where they are experiencing operating losses once again, and if that happens, there goes the high stock valuations and the ability to invest in quality improvements and new model development.

The charging problem is primarily a US problem. In Europe, several companies are working to build a fast charging network. Fastned, Allego, Shell Recharge, Ionity and many more, all with CCS plugs and power of min. 100 kW usually even min. 175 kW. And in Europe a CCS Type 2 plug is the standard for fast charging, a Tesla Model 3 comes with a CCS connector. So you can charge your Tesla anywhere and not just at the Tesla Superchargers. Also, I think if the charging infrastructure is in place, especially in Europe electric cars don't need a super long driving range at all (300km / 186mi) is enough for most people), it saves weight and allows a lower purchase price.

If each car manufacturer needs a different socket for their charging, that's a bad thing. It definitely needs a standard here, it's not the same for cars as it is for cellphones because while cellphones don't need a standard because all of them can use the same electric socket in the wall or all of them convert to usb eventually anyway, cars are a different thing, all of gas vehicles currently have the same socket for fuel, that's a standard, and that's why it works, you can go to any gas station and fuel up, if every car manufacturer has their own electric charging standards, that's a big problem for electric cars.

Between a base model S and a base model Taycan, I'd rather get a Taycan

If I'm being honest, a 160km range would be just fine for my use case.

My next car will definitely be an EV, however the challenge I’m having is finding is like you mentioned a good quality build like a BMW, with the tech and plushness of a Mercedes, with the range of long range Tesla (since they’ve dominated in that area). I don’t mind paying a pretty penny, but it has the be the perfect EV!
